It’s not often that your team gets the chance to face Manchester United in the cup and when the draw was made for the League Cup Fourth Round, we all thought “yeah, we’ll have a go” – after all we’ve already beaten their bitter rivals City earlier this year. So, with that bold and brash attitude we take 10,000 fans to Old Trafford hoping to complete a 2015 cup double over both the blue and red halfs of Manchester.

Before we introduce our next ‘Boro match talk’ article it’s interesting to highlight that the last time Boro beat United was back in 2005 when Mendieta grabbed a couple of goals, one either side of Hasselbaink and Yakubu who also scored that day in a 4-1 win. That game was almost exactly 10 years ago to the day, 29th October 2005, so here’s to another 4-1 win!

In a new series for Follow The Boro Brick Road this season, we are asking opposition fans to answer questions about their team and also about the mighty Boro. We invited United fan, Michael Badkin to share his thoughts ahead of the League Cup tie. We quizzed Michael about tonight’s game. Here’s what he had to say.

Name of opposition fan: Michael Badkin (@badders723)

How long have you been supporting United?

I didn’t have a clue about football as my Dad wasn’t a fan. My Welsh cousin was a United fan and he came up from Wales in the summer holidays and he taught me a few of the players names and about the team. I thought Ryan Giggs was called Bryan Briggs at first. I was about 8 years old.

What’s been your favourite United moment to-date?

We have been spoilt so there’s a fair few to choose from. Beck’s from the halfway line and Giggs against Arsenal, but Ole’s last minute winner against Bayern to win the biggest trophy and to clinch the treble has to win.

Can you remember any memorable games between United and Boro over the years?

I remember losing 3-2 against you in the treble winning season and again another defeat in 2005. I think that one was 4.1. I also remember winning the league at your ground. We won 3-0 that day and we were wearing the classic blue and white striped shirt.

Which Boro players will United be keeping a close eye on and why?

Downing! I always feel that he was judged too harshly throughout his career. Great left foot and superb delivery. He can also beat a man. Under-rated player, in my opinion.

Are there any Boro players that have caught your eye so far this season and do you think we have a team to win promotion back to the Premier League?

I’m not the best at keeping up with the Championship, but I can remember the rave reviews you were receiving last season for the style of football being played so hopefully that will put you close again.

When I think of Boro I remember the flair players like Gazza, Juninho, Ravanelli, Mendieta and Merson. The sort of players you pay to watch. A team with a history of that deserve to be in the top flight.

What’s your score prediction for United v Boro?

Gone are the days where you would put your house on United winning most games so most of my predictions these days seem to be a laboured win by one goal.

Many thanks to Michael for sharing his thoughts ahead of the game. We wish United all the best for the rest of the season.

Up the Boro #UTB
