Boro travel to Blackburn on Saturday hoping to make it four away wins in-a-row and take a firm grip on our place at the summit of the Championship. As always it will be a tough test for Karanka’s men, but the recent 3-0 win over Brighton will give this Boro team renewed confidence.
Blackburn sit mid-table and have been solid in recent games with an eight-game unbeaten run coming to an end last weekend at Reading. Paul Lambert will be desperate to get his team back on that unbeaten trail which provides all the ingredients for this Boxing Day clash to be a cracker.
In our ‘Boro match talk’ series this season we’ve been asking opposition fans to answer questions about their team and also about the mighty Boro. We invited Blackburn Rovers fan, Russell Adams to share his thoughts ahead of the match on Boxing Day. Russell is a season ticket holder at Ewood Park and here’s what he had to say about the game.
Name of opposition fan: Russell Adams (@)
How long have you been supporting Blackburn Rovers?
I have been a Rovers fan since 1989. I was 8-years old and my father took me to a Chelsea v Blackburn game (trying to get me to support Chelsea like him), and Rovers lost 4-0. I felt sorry for them and started following them after this.
What’s been your favourite Blackburn moment to-date?
Favourite moment ever has to be at Anfield in 1995. Even though Liverpool tried to cost us the league by winning 2-1, West Ham held Utd and we won the Premier League. Nothing like that has been done since, but Leicester are close to doing it 21 years later.
Can you remember any memorable games between Blackburn and Boro over the years?
Rovers v Boro is always a special match. Both are big clubs and want to progress. I was at the 3-2 win over Boro in 2006, Bellamy got 2 and Savage got sent off. Was a cracking game. Hopefully, Boxing Day will be the same!
As we approach halfway in this current season, can you sum up Blackburn’s season so far?
I am happy with our start. I honestly believed we were doomed this season when we sold our best players in the summer and still had the transfer embargo on us. I said if we stay out of relegation battle, I would be happy. Venkys thought otherwise and are finally listening to the fans. Star players have signed long-term contracts, Paul Lambert is in and we can sign players for the first time in a year. Future is looking good.
Which Blackburn players should Boro keep a close eye on and why?
Your ex-keeper, Jason Steele. Has been in fine form of late. Grant Hanley and Shane Duffy are gelling well at the back too. Craig Conway with his crossing and pace. And the one the got away from Boro, Jordan Rhodes. On a bit of a slump at present but still to be watched. He is due to score again.
If you could have two Boro players in the Blackburn team, which two would you choose and why?
I would take 3. Stewart Downing, George Friend and Dani Ayala. They would fit in very nicely in our squad (winking face).
What’s your score prediction for Rovers v Boro?
My heart is saying 3-1 Rovers and the head is saying 2-0 Boro, but as a Rovers fan, I am backing us to get the 3 points!
Many thanks to Russell for sharing his thoughts ahead of the game. We wish him and Blackburn a Merry Christmas and all the best for the rest of the season.
